Journal of Design History は、一九七七年に英国に創設された Design History Society の学会誌として、一九八八年の創刊以降、年四回 Oxford University Press から発行されている。
この雑誌は、その巻頭に掲げられている「編集方針」によると、「新しい研究成果を公表したり、対話や討論の場を提供したり、最近の興味ある刊行物に言及することによって、デザイン史研究の発展に対して積極的な役割を担うこと」を目的としており、デザインを成り立たせている幅広い基盤を考慮して、「たとえば人類学、建築史、美術史、実業史、工芸史、文化史、デザイン・マネジメント研究、経済・社会史、科学・技術史、社会学といった、物質文化を考察の対象にすえる他の学問とのつながり」において研究が進められるよう、求めている。投稿は、すべての国の研究者に開かれており、また内容としては、狭くデザイン史に限定することなく、それと関係し合う他領域の研究者からの投稿も歓迎されている。
ちなみに、手もとにある最新号（Volume 6, Number 2, 1993）は、次のような構成で成り立っている。

たまたまこの号の Debate には、University of Illinois の Victor Margolin の論文（‘Design history or design studies: subject matter and methods’, Design Studies, vol. 13, no. 2, April 1992, pp. 104-16）に対する反論が、すでに翻訳出版されている Objects of Desire の著者の Adrian Forty によってなされている。論点がデザイン史研究の目的や方法論に関するものだけに、欧米のデザイン史家だけでなく、わが国のこの分野の研究者にとっても、興味がもたれるところではないだろうか。
現在、この雑誌の編集委員会は英国在住の八人の研究者によって構成され、一方諮問委員会には、英国内外の二五人の専門家が名を連ねている。創刊以来、Wolverhampton University の Christopher Bailey 氏が編集委員長を務め、その重責を果たしている。これまで数度にわたり彼から手紙を受け取っているが、その内容は、日本におけるデザイン史研究の現状についての照会や、どのようにすれば日本のデザイン史家の学問的興味を誌面に反映することができるかといった問い合わせであった。わが国におけるデザイン史研究が本格化することが待たれるところである。
