Numeical Simulation

Key word: Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model

We carry out numerical simulations by NWP models to simulate real atmospheric phenomena or to experiment in meteorology and climatology with an idealized conditions. One of the NWP models SCALE; SCALE-RM is a regional atmospheric model and SCALE-GM is a global atmospheric model, and both models can be used from one package of the SCALE. The video is a sample of numerical simulation performed by SCALE-RM with 500m horizontal grid spacing. (This was processed by Ryuji Yoshida using VAPOR)

Programing

Key words: Fortran, C, Shell, Python, MPI, OpenMP, NetCDF

We use "high-level languages" (e.g. Fortran and C) for complicated analysis, and use "script languages" (e.g. shell, ruby, python) for simpler analysis and controlling analysis systems. Parallelizing libraries (e.g. MPI and OpenMP) are used to gain higher performance from the computers. I/O libraries (e.g. NetCDF, HDF) are also important to freely access to data.

Visualization and Quick analysis

Key words: GrADS, GMT, Gphys, PyNGL, VAPOR

We use a several visualization tools. GrADS is useful to draw meteorological field with some analyzing processes. GMT can create beautiful graphs and figures from many kind of data format. Gphys is a powerful quicklook tool developed by Japanese "gfd-dennou" group. PyNGL is a python library for analysis and visualization, and is getting popular. VAPOR is a open source software for 3D visualization.

Data

Data used in our laboratory are listed here.

Observation data

Key words: Radio-sonde, AMeDAS, Radar, Satellite

We use some kind of observation data to investigate the atmospheric phenomena which was occured in the real world.

Reanalysis data

Key words: GANAL, MANAL, JRA-55, ERA-Interim, NCEP-FNL

Reanalysis data such as GANAL are used as obserbation data for large scale phenomena and initial and boundary conditions of numerical simulations.

Hardwares

Hardware tools used in our laboratory are listed here.

Supercomputer

area map

Key words: High Performance Computing (HPC)

We try to use supercomputer for a big simulations; high-resolution simulation, long period simulation, and parameter sweep test (capacity computing).

Conventional machines

Key words: PC cluster machine, Workstaion

Conventional machines are consisted by ordinary linux servers, and useful tools for numerical studies. We have a Linux workstation sharing with laboratory members.

Laptop

Key words: easy do dance!

Laptop machine might be the most useful tool for numerical studies. We can create codes and run on the laptop even on the plane.
